1.  What type of an event is Art Airport Challenge?

Art Airport Challenge is a national competition for the artistic design of a renovated building located on the territory of Varna Airport. The initiative aims to encourage artists working in the field of Graffiti Art, who live and operate on the territory of Bulgaria, by offering the opportunity to realize a unique project inspired by the company’s New Vision – We place the airport in the traveler’s heart.

 

2. Who has initiated Art Airport Challenge?

Creator and organizer of Art Airport Challenge is Fraport Twin Star Airport Management in partnership with artistic consultant Nikolay Bozhinov | SUNSHINERS.

 

3.  What are the aims of Art Airport Challenge?

The competition aims to encourage Graffiti / Street Art artists who live and work on the territory of Bulgaria by offering them the opportunity to realize a unique project inspired by the new vision of the company - "We place the airport in the traveler’s heart ".

The competition provides a creative platform where established artists can present their own work in the public space of Varna Airport before a wide and varied audience.

The organizers of Art Airport Challenge believe that with the transformation of the building*, the territory of the airport will acquire a finished work of art, which will unite audiences from different cultures and age groups.

Art Airport Challenge is part of Fraport Bulgaria's New Vision, which aims to reflect, communicate and embody the universal values, mission, vision and goals of the company.

The competition program is tailored and prepared to optimize public relations. All events encourage the feedback of a broad and profiled audience.

*The chosen building was designed in 1972 and built by 1977. It is a two-story, massive building with mixed construction - monolithic and prefabricated reinforced concrete elements. On the north side, there is a metal loading ramp with a awning above it, made of a metal structure and covered with a sheet of iron.

4.  What is the duration of the competition?

Art Airport Challenge will be held during the period 04.12.2017 to 09.05.2018.

 

5.  Who can participate?

For the optimal realization of the project, the organizers have opened the competition to well-established authors in the field of Graffiti / Street Art with reputable practices in large-format art projects, working with durable sustainable materials and guaranteeing the quality performance of the artwork.

 

6.  How many stages is the competition divided into? Which are they?

Art Airport Challenge will be conducted in 2 stages.

Stage 1:

In the period December 7 - 22, the invited authors have to submit their application, according to which they will be evaluated. The application must contain a portfolio of digital photos of the authors' realized works and their creative biography.

Between December 22nd and January 14th, the jury will review the application folder of each participant that contains at least 5 images of works created between 2012 and 2017, accompanied by a short biography / profile of authors or creative teams. Each member of the jury will cast their vote by filling out a scorecard, which contains the announced criteria. The five authors who have received the highest score will be invited to take part in Stage 2 of the competition, and have the opportunity to submit an unique project for painting the walls of one of the buildings located on the territory of Varna Airport.

Stage 2:

In the period January 16th to February 12th, the selected 5 authors will submit their application, which contains their unique project prepared specifically for the area provided by Varna airport, accompanied by the concept of the submitted idea; the preferred type of materials for execution and their quantity.

The second stage, between February 12th and 27th, aims to cast a winner among one of the selected five finalist projects. Each member of the jury will present and discuss his selection. The project with the highest score will receive the top cash prize – budget for the project realization, including accommodation and transportation costs.

 

7.  What are the grading criteria?

In Stage 1, the grading criteria for the portfolio submissions are as follows:

  •    IMAGERY - previous realized projects, themes of other works, technical skills, large-scale realized projects;
  • · CREATIVE BIOGRAPHY - national and international participation in events, promotions in the arts, organizational practices, bibliography etc.
  •   AUTHOR’S UNIQUE SIGNATURE - stylistic identity;

Each criterion is rated from 1 to 5 according to the following scale:

1 - Inappropriate / not in line with format

2 - Satisfactory

3 - Good

4 - Very good

5 - Excellent

In Stage 2, the grading criteria for the submitted projects are as follows:

  • THEME - meaningful message and artistic interpretation of the proposed project;
  • CONFORMITY WITH THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT – color approach, incorporation of morphology of the building, as well as the surrounding visual environment
  • AUTHOR’S UNIQUE SIGNATURE - stylistic identity;
  • TECHNICAL SKILLS – evaluation of previous experience and capacity of the applicant for realization of spatially distinct frescoes, scale, proportions and visual impact.

Each criterion is rated from 1 to 5 according to the following scale:

1 - Under expectations

2 - Complies with expectations with some compromises

3 - Meets expectations

4 - Fully meets expectations

5 - Surpassing / Surprising Expectations

* The organizers of the Art Airport Challenge competition will not tolerate, admit and judge works containing advertising or obscene images that incite racial prejudices, depict political inclinations or any other form of discrimination.

8. What are the awards?

Stage #1:

  • 5 Awards valued at BGN 1000 - for the creation of a visual proposal of a mural by the 5 selected artists
  • 1 Award valued at BGN 1000 - "Public Vote" Award, for the creation of a visual proposal of a mural

On 15.01.2018, the selected 5 artists will be announced including the results of the "Public vote" throught the web page of the competition.

Stage #2:

  • 1 Award valued at BGN 8500 – remuneration for winning project implementation (including transportation and accommodation costs)

9. Who are the panelists of the jury?

The Jury of Art Airport Challenge includes the following representatives: the Management of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD - Members of the Board of Directors, Varna Airport Director and Burgas Airport Director, Desislava Staneva, Graffiti / Street Art Curator and Irina Tomova - Erka, Graffiti / Street Art Artist.

 

10. How is the issue of copyrights managed?

Copyrights @ Stage #1:

By sending application materials, all invited authors agree with the terms of the Contest, as well as with the publication of their names and a photograph of the provided portfolio. The "use" of their works will consist solely of mentioning the author's name and will include the following rights: displaying the works or parts of them on any electronic data carrier or electronic media, websites, social networks; any kind of electronic public dissemination; distribution of these media products among an unlimited number of people,  as well as providing these materials to private and public media only for the purpose of promoting the competition and the artworks of the participants.

Third parties do not have any rights over the visual materials. Third parties may only distribute media products presenting the visual materials upon agreement and written consent from the author and Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD.

Copyrights @ Stage #2:

All conceptual projects must be created by the participants specifically and solely for the purposes of the Contest. All represented artworks are the intellectual property of their authors, under the Copyright Law. Contest applicants take responsibility in the event that third parties claim copyright issues related to the submitted projects.

Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, in the role of an organizer and a sponsor, redeems an exclusively transferable right to "use" the works of the selected five authors without any time limitations, under the Copyright Law. The "use" of the works, which mention the author’s name, includes the following rights: reproduction, distribution and display of the works or parts of the works on any data carrier or media, digital or analogue: catalogs, prospectuses, television screens, screens, any other promotional materials as well as printed and electronic media, websites, social networks; any kind of public dissemination; distribution of these media products among an unlimited number of people. Third parties have no rights to the works / by-products. Third parties may only distribute media products presenting the works / drawings upon the agreement and consent of the Author and Varna Airport, part of “Fraport Twin Star Airport Management” AD. The competition organizer has the right to use the artistic work without the explicit permission of its author for the purpose for which it was ordered.
